Watch the leaves open
A roomy strainer or teapot lets you see the leaves change as they take up water. Whole-leaf tea offers a different brewing experience from finely broken leaf, but leaf size alone does not decide whether a cup is good.
Match the time to the tea
Do not assume the timing that worked for a tea bag will work for loose leaf. Start with the pack guide. Strain the tea completely before drinking so the first and last sips come from the same brew.
Try a second steep
Add fresh water to the drained leaves during the same tea session. The second cup may taste different from the first. Some leaves have more to give than others; taste the cup rather than relying on a promised number of steeps.
